CAREGIVER SPOTLIGHT

AMANDA HARTMAN

Have you ever heard someone’s personal story and gotten goosebumps because of how amazing it was? This month, Amanda, one of your peer ambassadors, will share what happens when you have a radical mindset shift and pursue your dreams.

How has Our Chance changed your life?

For most of my life, I have been barely getting by. As a mama, all my energy and all I do is for my baby. When I got enrolled in Our Chance, my mindset started to change. I was asked what MY hopes and dreams are. Growing up was hard and filled with trauma. One of the obstacles I faced because of that trauma was not getting my driver’s license. Our Chance changed that for me. I could pay for my driver’s education with the client’s assistance.

One more way Our Chance has changed my life is I am in college to be a medical coder and biller. I never thought in my wildest dreams I could go to college, nor get a great paying job like that. But here we are. Nothing is impossible. My dreams are within my reach because of Our Chance!

Autism Awareness Month

By: Kennetha Patterson

As we embrace Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Awareness Month this April, let's dive into simple yet impactful ways to understand and support individuals with ASD. ASD, a condition affecting communication, social interaction, and behavior, deserves our attention and empathy. Here are three friendly tips to make a difference:

1. Embrace the Spectrum: ASD isn't one-size-fits-all. Just like a box of assorted chocolates, individuals with ASD come with their unique flavors. Approach them with kindness and an open heart, appreciating their quirks and strengths.

2. Spot Early Signs: Like little detectives, keep an eye out for early signs of ASD, especially in kids. Early detection is like planting seeds for a thriving garden—it sets the stage for better outcomes. Let's champion for tools and support in schools to catch these signs early and nurture our little buds.

3. Personalize Your Support: Think of supporting someone with ASD like crafting a handmade gift—it's all about personal touch. Understand that what works for one might not for another. Tailor your support with care and understanding, making space for everyone to shine.

By sprinkling a little understanding and kindness, we can make ASD Awareness Month not just a month, but a movement of love and inclusivity.

DECLUTTERING AS A FORM OF SELF-CARE

BY: Kyanna Blakemore

What better way to prepare for a change from Winter to Spring than to Spring clean?

Spring cleaning is a way to get ready for the new season by decluttering and getting rid of things we no longer use. Did you know that Spring cleaning can also be a form of Self-Care? From experience, I naturally feel happier and more at ease when my home is cleaned and organized. I am not running around searching for things I need, becoming frustrated because I already know where everything is. However, having a cluttered and unorganized home can make room for that frustration. We may not be aware of where our frustration may be coming from, but it could be coming from clutter, not having organization, and holding on to things we no longer use or wear.

One self-care tip I use for myself is to regularly go through my home and throw away items I no longer find useful. Sometimes we think we may use those items and they end up just collecting dust in the end! Since Spring is among us, this is the perfect time for you to do the same, if you have been feeling like your space is affecting your self-care.

You don’t have to trash items that you are no longer using. You can give to relatives, friends, or even donate them to churches, schools, or non-profit organizations. And just remember the clearer your space, the clearer your mind. Here is a chart to help you get started.
